Handicap International

Mission Statement

Handicap International is an independant and impartial aid organisation working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster.

We work alongside people with disability and vulnerable populations, taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.

In Lao PDR, our objective is to strengthen capacities and collaboration of lao institutions and  civil society to address the major causes of impairments, and to promote, protect and realise the rights of persons with disabilities.

Programme Description

Handicap International (HI) is specialized in the field of disability, working alongside disabled people, their families and communities in achieving their overall autonomy and independence. The organization is recognized by partners and other actors for its comprehensive approach in the field of disability including social, economic, cultural, legislative and medical aspects.

The organization has been present in Lao PDR since 1996 and has been engaged in programs that focus on the prevention of disability, rehabilitation services at the institutional and community level, inclusive education (IE), awareness of disability issues, UXO clearance and education, UXO victim assistance, road safety and advocacy for People with Disabilities (PWDs).

HI has extensive experience in building the capacity of local actors (both institutional and non-institutional), through a variety of project interventions, including provision of training, survey tools, methodology and reference materials developed in Lao language. Capacity building also includes sharing technical workshops and building medium- to long-term national strategies. HI has also engaged strategically in non-project support to strengthen organizations working for people with disabilities , particularly the Lao Disabled People's Association (LDPA), and to foster partnership arrangement through coordination and collaboration within the Rehabilitation Community.
