Last updated:2008-04-28 00:00:00

As part of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Biodiversity Conservation Corridors Initiative (BCI) currently being facilitated by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) regional technical assistance (RETA) 6213, WWF and IUCN in collaboration with the Government of Lao PDR are the primary implementers for the BCI Pilot Site Xe Pian Dong Hua Sao. The primary goal of this work is to restore and maintain the ecological integrity of the Tri-Border Forest landscape through improved management of core areas for biodiversity conservation and watershed protection and development of sustainable-use landscapes or corridors that connect National Protected Areas.

Specific objectives include:

- Poverty reduction through sustainable use of natural resources and development of livelihoods;

- Clear definition of optimal land uses and harmonized land management regimes;

- Restoration and maintenance of ecosystem connectivity;

- Capacity building in government staff and local communities;

- Sustainable financing mechanism and structures integrated with government planning and budgeting procedures.

The pilot phase will develop a sustainable-use corridor linking Dong Hua Sao NPA in Champasak Province to the Xe Pian NPA in the Tri-Border Forests landscape of southern Lao PDR. Although the corridor area covers parts of both Champasak and Attapeu, this pilot phase of the project will focus in ten target villages of Patoumphone District of Champasak province. In an effort to facilitate expansion of the project Attapeu province will be included in training and awareness raising activities.
