Project Description:

The Xe Pian Ecotourism Project aims to develop nature tourism/ecotourism in Xe Pian NPA to generate income for both local communities and protected area managers in order to support sustainable protection of the protected areas important biodiversity values.

>Project Objectives

>

1. Improve physical and human capacities for supporting and developing ecotourism in Xe Pian NPA in order to allow ecotourism to reach its maximum economic potential in the future without compromising its sustainability.

2. Assist the Provincial Tourism Office and the Department of Forestry to develop and implement a sustainable ecotourism strategy, integrating activities with NPA management and protection.

3. Create village-based ecotourism products that generate revenues for local stakeholders in order support the alleviation of poverty inside the NPA and its boundries.

4. Encourage village inhabitants, private sector stakeholders, and tourists to conserve the NPA's natural resources for the purpose of creating a renewable source of revenue via sustainable ecotourism development.

>Project Sites and Activities

The project will develop ecotourism in Pathoumphone District in Champasak Province and Sanamxai District in Attapeu Province. Ecotourism activities to be developed and supported include elephant trekking, birdwatching, canoeing, hiking and forest walks, wildlife threat monitoring, cultural performances and interaction with local communities. Project activities include survey and planning for ecotourism development; awareness and education related to ecotourism for both public and private sector stakeholders; construction of small infrastructures; training in hospitality and guiding for villagers and provincial tour company representatives; monitoring of positive and negative impacts of tourism; and promotion and marketing of ecotourism products and services.
