Sustainable Rattan Harvest and Production

Last updated:2008-05-14 00:00:00

Sustainable Rattan Harvest and Production in Lao PDR is a two phase project in partnership with local communities, Lao PDRs National Agriculture and Forest Research Institute (NAFRI), Lao PDRs Forest Research Centre, the Department of Forestry, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Faculty of Forestry at Laos National University, and donor support from IKEA, a global furniture company. Phase I is a three year project (2006 to 2008) that is implementing a sustainable rattan harvest and production model in Vientiane and Bolikhamxai Provinces to support local livelihoods, conserve nature, and capitalise on the rapidly growing rattan export market by helping establish full-scale production and manufacture of rattan products within Lao PDR. Phase II is a three year project (2009 to 2011) that will implement nationally the community-based model developed in phase I. This project will strengthen small to medium rattan enterprise by improving the processing and supply chain, including the introduction of certification, and implement and enforce national and regional policy to support sustainable rattan management, marketing and regional trade.
