District Risk Education for Children in Sayaboury (DREC)

Last updated:2009-10-08 00:20:25

Disaster Risk Education for Children (DREC) aims to contribute to a reduction in vulnerability in target communities in Sayaboury District. DREC will be implemented from July 2007-June 2008 in parallel with the Tools for District Risk Assessment (TDRA) short-term activity and the Sayaboury Integrated Hazard Mitigation Project (SIHMP) long-term activity.  DREC seeks to develop and test a model for disaster risk reduction in schools for evaluation and replication if and where appropriate, whilst concurrently piloting a model of child-run Disaster Risk Management (DRM) clubs.
DREC aims to equip children in schools with knowledge and skills in disaster risk reduction, so they can act as agents of change and advocates in building a more disaster resilient community.
DREC will develop a set of localised modules and materials to be taught in conjunction with the national curriculum and will provide training to school teachers on their implementation. The four target schools (2 secondary and 2 primary) will act as a pilot to test the modules.
