Early Childhood Development Project

Last updated:2014-05-13 22:38:03

The Maternal & Child Health project “First Steps” began in Lao PDR in 2009.  It builds on the prior experiences of Handicap International Belgium’s Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) project that included the development of mobile clinics and a network of CBR agents.

A second phase of the project in 2011-2013 took lace in four districts of Savannakhet province and to promote an integrated approach, within the existing health system, for the prevention, early detection and early intervention and referral of children ages 0-5 with, or at risk of, disabilities or impairments.

The new phase of the project will focus on early childhood development and will provide support to the Children Hospital in Vientiane to develop screening tools for new born and children under 5 years old and to provide child development activities in its well child clinic.
