Market Acceleration of Advanced Clean Cookstoves in the Greater Mekong Sub-region

Last updated:

The project “Market Acceleration of Advanced Clean Cookstoves in the Greater Mekong Sub-region” is an EnDev/SNV intervention in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

It aims to start up a sustainable market for clean smokeless cookstoves through the sales of 25,000 devices from 2016-2018. It receives funding from “Energising Development,” a global programme managed by GIZ and financed by DFID and different European donors.

The vast majority of Lao households use charcoal and/or firewood for cooking, and the smoke contributes to severe health issues; nearly 6,000 people in Laos die each year from diseases associated with smoke from cooking.  The inefficient burning of wood and charcoal for cooking also contributes significantly to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by 5 tonnes per stove per year.

The advanced clean cookstoves must first pass criteria on emissions and fuel savings, which are assessed at the laboratory of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Should the new stove model qualify, its producer and distributor becomes eligible for a mechanism that finances part of the startup costs.
